Response to Ngugi's Article

Response to Ngugi's Article

English became the language of the global communication. In the age of the globalization ELT(English Language Teaching) needs to focus on more on the local concerns. For that English teacher need to raise  awarness about English learning. Teaching is not just transferring knowledge. If teacher just keep transferring without critical thinking , linguistic imperialism will keep going.  Decolonizing the language was one of the main concerns of the newly liberated counties in the poscolnial age. To establish their new identities, they even developed new Englishes which were altered from the standard English to suit local surroundings. But still in Korea people  worship English.  And also ELT focus on just Amercican English. But it contain big problem that is linguistic imperialism.
Actually from 6th English curiccula,  one of the English subject objective is   that developing student's ablility for introducing Korean culture to the foreigner. It is very necessary ability to the students. English is not a worship things, it is mean to cultivate  cross-cultural communicative competence. So as a teacher we have to contribute to the students' comprehnsive understanding of  English language and cultures in a critical comparison with their own language and culture.

Reading media texts

This video clip is an advertisemet for pre- cooked rice. There are 4 people who are dad, mom, daughter, and son.  Dad, daugher and son are playing  and having fun in the snow. And mom is watching them through the window. It seems that  they are very happy family in snow day. But  when I watched  the video clip  with wowan's side why they are not playing together. Why just with dad? Why mom is looking them at home? This  advertisemet  discribe women very passive. When her husband and her kids said to come and enjoy together, she hesitate to join them.  Because she have to prepare  meal for her family. Her kids said "Don't worry for that. Let's eat Hatban" But she still look uncomfortable for that. It means that women feel sorry when they don't serve meal by her selfe. Through this commercial people can have prejudice only woman have to prepare for her family or take it in the fact. For old generation women  it seems quite true, but for young generation women it looks so  unfair. Because these days genders's roles are having changed. But there are still  premodern of thinking in Korea like this commercial.

Pop culture-audition TV programs

Audition TV programs are all the rage in Korea these days. One of the most notable one is "위대한 탄생'  There are similar shows popping up on broadcasting networks. "신입사원", Super Star K .etc...The contestants are those who want to get their foot in the door in the entertainment business. It's the prefect opportunity for them to get chance. Viewers love to watch real people trying to make their dreams come true. So that's why those programs are very popular these days. Even if the participants don't win first place, there's still a great chance for them to be discovered along the way.

Response to Elliot Patton's "Korean's Proofreading Woes"

Nowdays, the world is becoming more small and internatioalized. So

English plays an important role in the fields of politics, economics,

trade, commerce, sightseeing, study abroad and other activities. While

reading this article I thought Elliot Patton is too focus on American

English. Englis is using not only in English-speaking countries but in

many other countries. It is a common language also in Asian. Asian

countries are making an effort to improve nation-centred English

education. Many Asian people are using English as an additional

language. Asian English has various regional gradations which are not

the same as for British or American English. I think people are

speaking English affected by the culture of their mother tongues. So

there are many Englishes, so called variations of English 'World

Englishes'. Few years ago I heard about Globish. Globish focus on

communication . We have to respect each country's culture itself in

globalized world.
